Definition: Scuds are small, aquatic crustaceans belonging to the order Amphipoda. They are generally harmless and can be found in aquariums, often introduced inadvertently. Scuds are scavengers and serve as a supplemental food source for fish.

Function in the Aquarium: While harmless to most aquarium inhabitants, scuds can multiply rapidly under certain conditions. Some fish species enjoy feeding on scuds, making them a beneficial addition to the aquarium ecosystem.

Note: in shrimp tanks Scuds are a pest as they compete for food and have been known to prey on baby shrimplets.
