Saddle

Definition: In shrimp, a saddle is a visual indicator of a female carrying eggs. It appears as a saddle-shaped area on the back of the shrimp, just behind the head and in front of the tail. The saddle is translucent and represents developing eggs within the female.

Function in the Aquarium: The term "saddle" is used because of the shape's resemblance to a horse saddle. Observing a saddle in a female shrimp suggests that it is in reproductive readiness and may release eggs soon.
