Rhizome
Definition: A rhizome is a specialized plant structure, specifically a horizontal, underground stem. It serves as a storage organ for nutrients and a point from which roots and shoots emerge. In aquariums, certain plants exhibit a rhizomatous growth pattern.
Example Plants with Rhizomes:
Anubias: A genus of aquatic plants with thick, leathery leaves that grow from a rhizome. Anubias species are commonly attached to rocks or driftwood in aquariums.
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus): Known for its distinctive, pinnately lobed leaves, Java Fern also grows from a rhizome. It is often attached to decorations in aquariums.
