Definition: Acclimation is the gradual process of allowing organisms to adapt to new environmental conditions. In the aquarium hobby, acclimation is crucial when introducing new fish or invertebrates to the tank. This slow adjustment helps reduce stress and allows the organisms to adapt to the temperature, water chemistry, and overall conditions of the aquarium.

Procedure: During acclimation, hobbyists often float the sealed bag containing the new aquatic inhabitants in the aquarium water to equalize the temperature. Then, small amounts of aquarium water are periodically added to the bag over an extended period, allowing the organisms to acclimate to the water parameters of the tank.
