Definition: Respiration is the process by which organisms take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Fish, shrimp, snails, bacteria and biofilm all consume oxygen.

Function in the Aquarium: In aquariums, proper oxygenation is crucial for the well-being of fish and other aquatic life. Monitoring respiration rates helps assess the effectiveness of aeration and filtration systems in maintaining optimal oxygen levels. If fish appear to be gasping for air you may need to add additional oxygen such as a air stone or sponge filter.

Note: when the lights are off plants can consume oxygen as well. Proper filtration will help to counteract this effect and keep your critters happy.
