Carbon (Activated)

Definition: Activated carbon is a filter media used for chemical filtration. It adsorbs impurities, odors, and discoloration from the water.

Function in the Aquarium: Activated carbon is a porous material with a large surface area that can effectively adsorb organic and inorganic substances in aquarium water. It is commonly used to remove impurities, toxins, and unwanted odors, contributing to improved water clarity. Activated carbon needs regular replacement to maintain its effectiveness in the filtration process.

Pro tip: Having Activated carbon in your emergency kit can prove extremely important. If an unknown chemical gets into your tank quickly adding this will start to remove the toxins and may help avoid loss of life (fish, snails and shrimp).
